Just days after a Moroccan boxer was jailed for allegedly sexually assaulting two members of the cleaning staff in the Olympic Village, a second boxer faces similar accusations in Rio de Janeiro.
Namibian boxer Jonas Junius — the country’s flag bearer at Friday’s Opening Ceremony — stands accused by a housekeeper of grabbing her, forcefully kissing her and offering her money in exchange for sex, according to a police report obtained by Brazilian television network Globo, via USA Today.
Brazilian authorities arrested Junius on attempted rape charges, and he will be transferred to a maximum security prison in the Rio de Janeiro neighborhood of Bangu, where he will await trial, according to the report. Barring an appeal to a federal court, Junius will reportedly not be available for Thursday’s opening-round light welterweight match against French foe Hassan Anzille.
In addition to Junius, Morocco’s Hassan Saada also awaits trial in Bangu for alleged sexual assault. Last week, the Moroccan boxer was accused by two members of the Olympic Village’s cleaning staff of pushing one of them against a wall, trying to kiss her and squeezing one of their breasts.
Saada, a light heavyweight, has officially been ruled out of competition.
