1891 - James Naismith invents basketball (Canada).
1909 - Thomas J Lynch becomes president of baseball's National League.
1925 - First hockey game at Madison Sq Garden, Mont Candiens 3, NY Americans 1.
1940 - Nick Buoniconti, NFL linebacker (Miami Dolphins)/sportscaster (NBC) is born.
1944 - Stan Bahnsen, pitcher (NY Yankee, 1968 AL Rookie-of-year) is born.
1965 - William Eckert replaces Ford Frick as 4th commissioner of baseball.
1973 - Golf Resort (Disney Inn) opens.
1980 - NY Yankee Dave Winfield becomes highest-paid player, 10 years $15M.
1992 - Arthur Ashe is named Sports Illustrated Sportman of Year.
1997 - SF 49ers retire Joe Montana's #16.
2003 - Keith Magnuson, Chicago Blackhawks ice hockey player (b. 1947)
was killed in an auto accident in Vaughan, Ontario with fellow NHL
alumnus Rob Ramage behind the wheel (Ramage survived the accident,
but was later found guilty of vehicular manslaughter).
