1874 - Baseball batter's box is officially adopted.
1909 - Mel Ott, American baseball player, 1st NLer to hit
500 home runs, Hall of Famer (NY Giants) (d. 1958) is born.
1927 - Babe Ruth becomes highest paid baseball player ($70,000 per year).
1951 - First NBA All-Star Game: East beats West 111-94 at Boston.
1962 - Wilt Chamberlain scores incredible 100 points in an NBA game.
1969 - Phil Esposito becomes first NHL Player to score 100 points in a season.
1982 - Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback is born.
1991 - NC State Chris Corchiani becomes first NCAAer to get 1,000 assists.
2004 - Marge Schott, Cincinnati Reds team owner (b. 1928) dies.
2005 - Rick Mahler, baseball pitcher (b. 1953) dies at age 51 of a heart attack 
at home in Jupiter, Florida, where he was preparing for his second season 
as a minor league pitching coach for the New York Mets.
