The reigning Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks placed leading scorer Patrick Kane on long-term injured reserve due to a leg injury, the National Hockey League team said Friday.
The 25-year-old right wing, last season's Stanley Cup playoff Most Valuable Player, was hurt during Wednesday's 4-0 win over St. Louis.
While the Blackhawks did not reveal the severity of the injury, it is believed to be a knee injury that could keep Kane sidelined until the playoffs begin in mid-April.
Kane, who played for the US Olympic silver-medal squad in 2010 at Vancouver and in last month's Sochi Winter Olympics, has scored 29 goals and set up 40 more for Chicago this season.
The Blackhawks replaced Kane by activating 19-year-old Finnish center Teuvo Teravainen, who joined Chicago after completing his season with Jokerit in Finland, where he scored nine goals and set up 35 others over 49 games.
With 40 wins and 95 points from 70 games, the Blackhawks rank second to league-leading St. Louis in the Central division and fourth overall in the Western Conference.
