Having a somewhat successful but overly troubling college career, Chad Kelly will be meeting with the Buffalo Bills during the draft process. While the team may be treating this like any other prospect meeting, Kelly does carry a bit more significance with him. The nephew of Hall of Famer Jim Kelly, Chad is a bit of royalty when it comes to this team.
Heck, Chad has even expressed in recent weeks that it would be a dream come true for him to play for the Buffalo Bills. As a successful college quarterback looking to make the transition to the NFL, his selection would carry little risk as well due to his low draft stock. Seen a late Day three selection, Kelly has plenty of red flags in his file but is a player that has the talent needed to succeed.
However, the biggest quandary will be how the team views said red flags. Thrown off the Clemson football team back in 2014, Kelly made the news again this past year after rushing onto his brother’s high school football field and getting involved in a scuffle. Considering his senior season at Ole Miss was a disappointment, Kelly has a had a tough 2016-17 to say the least.
Looking back at his junior season for his best stats, Kelly was one of college football’s best quarterbacks. Starting all 13 games for Ole Miss, Kelly threw for 4,042 yards and 31 touchdowns as well as a 155.9 passer rating. Though all these numbers dropped his senior year, Kelly showed that he has the talent needed to get the job done.
While Kelly does have some issues that need to be taken care of, there is little risk in selecting him due to his low draft stock. Needing a quarterback of the future, if the team doesn’t see a top player in the first round, Kelly could be a later selection for the team. If he doesn’t workout, it was worth a try. However, if the pick were to payoff, how good would it be to once again see a Kelly leading the Bills to victory.
