BIGGEST NEWS OF THE DAY: The San Diego Padres have agreed to a one-year deal with Jered Weaver, according to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale. The veteran right-hander will earn a base salary of $3M million, adds Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, with an additional $250K available through an assignment bonus.
Though he’s far beyond his prime, Weaver seems like a lock to earn a spot in the Padres’ depleted starting rotation. The 34-year-old right-hander has no fastball left to speak of, but the Padres hope he’ll be crafty enough to eat innings and lead a staff filled with retreads and unproven prospects.
Weaver posted a 5.06 ERA last season to go along with a 5.2 K/9. [@BNightengale]

Weaver spent his first 11 MLB seasons with the Angels, winnings 150 games.
HOME SWEET HOME: Angels owner Arte Moreno confirmed the club will remain at Angel Stadium until at least 2028. He had until 2018 to notify Anaheim of his intent to exercise an escape clause, but that will not be the case. [@JeffFletcherOCR]

NO CHANGES NEEDED: Indians manager Terry Francona confirmed that Cody Allen will remain the team’s closer while Andrew Miller stays in his roving set up man role. The move was not a surprise, seeing as Allen had done nothing to lose the job. He’s notched 90 saves while posting a 2.52 ERA over the last three seasons. [@MLBastian]
TENSIONS RISING: Yankees president Randy Levine lashed out at Dellin Betances on Saturday after the team defeated the star reliever in an arbitration hearing. The game-changing right-hander filed at $5M, which apparently insulted Levine. The team countered at $3M, which the arbitor agreed was a fair deal. UH OH: The injuries seem to be piling up quickly this spring, though fortunately for the Blue Jays Josh Donaldson’s doesn’t appear overly concerning. The All-Star third baseman was diagnosed with a right calf strain on Saturday, which was suffered during running drills one day earlier. The early belief is Donaldson’s opening day status will not be impacted, but these injuries do tend to be unpredictable. [@ShiDavidi]
