Metta World Peace has made the Los Angeles Lakers’ 15-man regular-season roster, league sources told Yahoo Sports.
The team waived guard Jabari Brown to make room for World Peace, 35, who has completed a journey back to the Lakers after stints with the New York Knicks, Chinese Basketball Association and Italian league.
Brown, 22, made a strong case for a roster spot and could be an option for several teams. He averaged 12 points, 2.1 assists and 1.9 rebounds in 19 games with the Lakers after his call-up from the Los Angeles D-Fenders of the NBA Development League.
World Peace – formerly known as Ron Artest – has a decorated history with the Lakers as a clutch shooter and defender, helping the team to the 2010 NBA championship.
World Peace’s return to the Lakers includes a long-term plan to transition into an assistant coach for the franchise, league sources told Yahoo. He has been a mentor for several young Lakers players, including 2014 No. 7 overall pick Julius Randle.
The Lakers released World Peace after the 2012-13 season using the amnesty clause.
World Peace has averaged 13.7 points and 4.7 rebounds in 15 NBA seasons with the Chicago Bulls, Indiana Pacers, Sacramento Kings, Houston Rockets, Lakers and New York Knicks.
He was selected with the 16th overall pick out of St. John’s by the Bulls in the 1999 draft.
