Forty shooters. 11 goals. Nearly 20 minutes worth of shootout action. NHL history.
The Florida Panthers and Washington Capitals made NHL history on Tuesday night when they took part in the longest shootout ever. In the 20th (!) round, Nick Bjugstad beat Braden Holtby and sent Panthers fans home happy with a 2-1 victory.
Because of how long it went, Alex Ovechkin, Nick Backstrom, Jussi Jokinen and Bjugstad were all able to take two shots apiece. The Panthers, meanwhile, staved off defeat five times to extend the proceedings.

The previous NHL record for the longest shootout? That came back in the first season of its existence when Marek Malik went into his trick bag and beat Olaf Kolzig as the New York Rangers triumped over, you guessed it, the Capitals in November 2005.
Ovechkin, Brooks Laich and Tomas Fleischmann were part of that record-setting evening as well.
