1956 - Connie Mack, baseball manager (Phila A's, 1901-50), dies at 93.
1960 - Boston Celtic Bill Russell becomes first NBAer with 50 rebounds (51).
1963 - AFL's Dallas Texans become KC Chiefs.
1970 - Alonzo Mourning, NBA center (Miami Heat, Charlotte Hornets) is born.
1982 - Dodgers trade Davey Lopes to A's breaking up the 
longest-playing infield (Cey-Russell-Lopes-Garvey).
1983 - Baseball orders Mickey Mantle to sever ties with Claridge Casino.
1983 - Wayne Gretzky sets NHL all star record of 4 goals in 1 period.
1985 - Bruce Morris, Marshall Univ, makes a 92' 5½" basketball shot.

1998 - First female ice hockey game in Olympic history Finland beats Sweden 6-0.
2000 - Sid Abel, Canadian ice hockey player (Detroit Red Wings), dies at 81
2000 - Derrick Thomas, American football player (b. 1967) dies 
from a massive 
blood clot that developed in his paralyzed lower extremities and traveled to his lungs. 
His paralysis was the result of severe injuries sustained in a car accident weeks earlier.
