1946 - Giants outfielder Danny Gardella is first major leaguer to 
announce he is jumping to the "outlaw" Mexican League.
1962 - Hana Mandlikova, Prague Czechoslovakia, tennis player (1985 US Open) is born.
1970 - AL Cy Young winner Denny McLain suspended for bookmaking.
1980 - Eric Heiden skates Olympic record 1000m in 1:15.18.
1984 - First brother combo to win Gold & Silver in same event 
at Olympics (Phil & Steve Mahre-Slalom).
1996 - Charles O Finley, baseball owner (Oakland A's), dies at 76.
