1900 - Highest scoring opening game, Phillies beat Braves 19-17 in 10.
1901 - 5th Boston Marathon won by Jim Caffrey of Canada in 2:29:23.6, 
first repeat winner of the marathon as Caffrey won the preceding year in 1900.
1907 - 11th Boston Marathon won by Tom Longboat of Canada 
in 2:24:24, first non-American winner.
1920 - 24th Boston Marathon won by Peter Trivoulidas of Greece in 2:29:31, 
first winner outside of the United States or Canada.
1949 - Yankees dedicate a plaque for Babe Ruth.
1954 - 7-time winner of Boston Marathon, 65-year-old Clarence Demar, 
runs his last race at Boston finishing 78th.
1956 - First ML baseball game in NJ, Dodgers beat Phillies in Roosevelt Stadium.
1960 - Baseball uniforms begin displaying player's names on their backs.
1962 - Al Unser Jr, Indy-car racer (over 10 wins) is born.
1966 - Roberta Bignay becomes first woman to run in the Boston Marathon.

1986 - Michael Spinks beats Larry Holmes in 15 rounds for Heavyweight boxing title.
1986 - Candace Parker, American basketball player is born.
1987 - LA Clippers end season with a terrible 12-70 record.
1987 - Maria Sharapova, Russian tennis player is born.
1989 - Kevin Elster (NY Mets), sets errorless shortstop mark at 73.
1990 - Pistons & 76'ers get into a fight accruing $162,500 fines (NBA record).
1991 - Evander Holyfield beats George Foreman in 12 forHeavyweight boxing title.
