1852 - Cap Anson, American baseball player (d. 1922) is born.
1917 - Babe Ruth beats NY Yanks, pitching 3-hit 10-3 win for Red Sox.
1921 - KDKA broadcast first radio sporting event, a boxing match (Ray-Dundee).
1947 - Jackie Robinson becomes first black in modern major-league baseball.
1962 - New York Mets make a losing debut.
1966 - Emmett Ashford becomes first black major league umpire.
1975 - Hank Aaron returns as a Milwaukee player (Brewer).
1976 - 40th Golf Masters Championship: Raymond Floyd wins, shooting a 271.
1987 - Yankees score 12 runs in 7th inning vs KC Royals.
1989 - First playoff goal scored by a goalie, Ron Hextall of Philadelphia.
