Red Wings winger Gustav Nyquist was suspended six games by the NHL Department of Player Safety following an over-the-phone hearing on Wednesday afternoon.
Nyquist will lose $158,333.33 in salary due to the suspension. He’ll return to Detroit’s lineup in Edmonton on March 4.
Nyquist and Spurgeon were battling for a puck along the boards in the first period of the Wings game in Minnesota over the weekend. While Nyquist wasn’t looking, Spurgeon approached from behind and shoved him to the ice. Nyquist rose and immediately swung his stick blade at Spurgeon’s face.
Spurgeon was okay, if shaken up. Nyquist received four-minute double minor for high-sticking because Spurgeon was bleeding. Wild players and coach Bruce Boudreau were outraged by the penalty, judging it too light for such a dangerous play.

Last season, the DPS suspended Blackhawks defenseman Duncan Keith for a similar high-sticking play. Nyquist had no NHL supplemental discipline history until this incident.
