In penalties NASCAR announced on Tuesday, Jimmie Johnson's Sprint Cup team escaped with a warning while Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s Camping World Truck Series team did not for infractions cited last weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Johnson's No. 48 team was caught modifying the side-skirt on his car during Saturday's All-Star Race. Though commonplace late last season, NASCAR banned the practice of improving a cars' aerodynamics by pulling on body panels mid-race after teams took advantage and flared fenders to excessive lengths.
Johnson's crew chief, Chad Knaus, said a crewmember was fixing damage after Johnson had scraped the wall earlier, according to NASCAR.com. The team was issued a written warning, given on first offense.
Not so fortunate was JR Motorsports, co-owned by Earnhardt, which fielded a truck Kasey Kahne drove to victory Friday night. The vehicle failed post-race technical inspections after officials determined the truck was too low on both sides in the front and too high in the right rear.
Consequently, NASCAR fined crew chief Joe Shear Jr. $6,000 and placed him on probation through the end of the season. JRM lost 10 ownership points.
Both infractions committed by the Johnson and Earnhardt teams are considered minor.
