1885 - John Ward & several teammates secretly form Brotherhood of

1907 - Jimmy Foxx, baseball HR hitter (534, Detroit Tigers) is born.
1927 - Ross Youngs, Hall of Fame baseballer, dies of Bright's disease at 30.
1939 - First TV NFL game-Eagles vs Dodgers.
1967 - Joe DiMaggio is hired as executive VP of A's by Charlie Finley.
1973 - Ichiro Suzuki, Japanese baseball player is born.
1978 - Grete Weitz runs female world record marathon (2:32:29.8).
1984 - NFL quarterback Ken Stabler retires.
1992 - Atlanta, becomes 1st US team to win a World Series game out of US.
1992 - Red Barber, sportscaster (Dodgers, Yankees), dies at 84.
1997 - Coldest World Series game Marlins vs Cleveland (38°F).
1997 - NY Ranger Wayne Gretsky wife Janet is knocked unconcious
& gets 2 stitches while watching the game as a plexiglass falls on her.
