1895 - The first individual time trial for racing Cyclists 
is held on a 50-mile course north of London.
1906 - Henry Mathewson (NY Giants, Christy's brother) walks 14 men.
1908 - White Sox Ed Walsh tops Detroit 6-1 for his 40th victory.
1912 - Red Sox defeat A's 3-0 for then AL record 105th win.
1921 - First World Series radio broadcast, Yanks beat Giants 3-0.
1922 - Yanks & Giants play an infamous 3-3 tie World Series game.
1923 - Bill Wirtz, longtime Chicago Blackhawks owner (d. 2007) is born.
1947 - Al Gionfriddo makes a great catch off Joe DiMaggio in World Series.
1949 - Bill James, American baseball writer is born.
1953 - 50th World Series sees NY Yankees beat Dodgers, 4 games to 2, 
as NY Billy Martin's 12 hits set record; Yanks win record 5th consec WS.
1956 - Yogi  Berra becomes 4th Yank to hit a World Series grand slam.
1962 - Michael Andretti, Indy-car racer/Auto Hall of Fame (elected 1986) is born.
1965 - Mario Lemieux, Montreal, NHL high scoring center (Pitts Penguin, #66) is born.
1965 - Patrick Roy, Quebec, NHL goalie (Mont Canadiens, Colorado Avalanche) is born.
1969 - Tom Dempsey of New Orleans Saints kicks 55-yard field goal.
1982 - First NJ Devils game, tie the Pitts Penguins 3-3 at the Meadowlands.
1991 - Carlos Huerta's NCAA record streak of successful 
points after a touchdown ends at 157.
1991 - Fresno State ties NCAA record with 49 points 
in a quarter, as they route New Mexico 94-17.
1997 - Dave Marr, golfer/commentator, dies at 63
2003 - Dan Snyder, Canadian ice hockey player (b. 1978) dies in a single 
vehicle car crash driven by Atlanta Thrashers teammate Dany Heatley.
