Mark Sanchez tears ligaments in hand, will miss workouts

Mark Sanchez. (AP)Mark Sanchez's status as the Denver Broncos' quarterback-of-the-moment has taken a slight detour, as Sanchez has torn ligaments in his non-throwing hand.
Sanchez underwent a surgical repair on Saturday to repair the ligament on his left hand, which he tore during workouts on Thursday. The Broncos are beginning their preseason OTAs, and Sanchez is likely to miss at least a few days of the workouts.
The veteran QB's absence means that second-year QB Trevor Siemian and highly touted rookie Paxton Lynch will get some early spotlight. Lynch is projected as the franchise's future after Denver lost Peyton Manning to retirement and Brock Osweiler to a Houston free-agency signing.
Sanchez joined the Broncos via trade with Philadelphia in March, and is expected to serve in some still-undetermined mentoring role for Denver. Broncos GM John Elway has said that Lynch could be ready "quicker than a lot of people think," perhaps laying the groundwork for an early rookie debut. Getting these extra snaps with the Broncos' first-team offense surely won't hurt Lynch's development, and could prove beneficial as the Memphis product adjusts to the pro game.
