After a ten-year run, Cody Rhodes (AKA Stardust) wrote on his personal Twitter account Saturday afternoon that he has asked to be released from WWE. Rhodes started out in OVW in 2006 before making his WWE main roster debut in 2007. After originally teaming with Hardcore Holly, Rhodes got his first significant push as a part of Randy Orton’s faction, Legacy where he teamed up with Orton and Ted DiBiase Jr.From there, Rhodes would have success as a singles wrestler playing several iterations of his “Dashing One” character and later, Stardust. Perhaps his most significant run came in 2011-2012 when while playing a “deformed” heel that wore a mask after getting facial reconstructive surgery, Rhodes won the Intercontinental Championship on two occasions. Rhodes also won tag team gold with Holly and DiBiase as well as Drew McIntyre and his brother, Goldust. In recent years though the trajectory of Rhodes’ career in WWE has taken a wrong turn. While he seemed to genuinely enjoy playing Stardust, he never was given much of chance to run with it and was mostly given lower mid-card matches and feuds. The high mark of his run as Stardust probably came when he feuded with Arrow star Stephen Amell in the summer of 2015. Rhodes is still only 30 (!!) and he still should have a long career ahead of him should he choose to continue wrestling. He is undoubtedly a talented performer both in-ring and out, so here’s hoping whoever scoops him up unlocks his full potential.
