It had to be done, just for the headline: Rex Ryan's Buffalo Bills claimed linebacker IK Enemkpali off waivers.
You know Enemkpali's name now, though you likely didn't as you went to sleep on Monday night. Enemkpali punched New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith and broke his jaw on Tuesday morning. You would think that a player who had an off-field history from college and just punched his own teammate in a fight over a $600 plane ticket would need some time to repair his image to get another shot.
Nope. Not with Ryan running a team.
Ryan coached the linebacker last year when both were with the Jets. If you could have scripted a funnier scenario, it would be the fired Jets coach claiming a player who just socked the current Jets quarterback in the mouth, bringing Enemkpali to one of the Jets' division rivals. Those games will be fun. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport first reported the news.
Ryan doesn't mind taking guys who have a checkered past. He signed guard Richie Incognito, who was identified as the main culprit in the Miami Dolphins' bullying scandal, when nobody else would. He brought Percy Harvin from the Jets to the Bills, and Harvin has his own history of punching teammates. Now he has Enemkpali, who appeared to ruin his career when he knocked the Jets' quarterback out for 10 weeks. But Ryan didn't seem to mind.
The Bills-Jets rivalry should be a little more heated now.
