Pirates stars featured in '(We Are) Family Matters' video

The 90s are making a comeback, folks, and MLB teams are right in the middle of it.
One week after the San Francisco Giants starred in a Full House parody video to promote Full Clubhouse day on Sept. 30, the Pittsburgh Pirates have joined the fray with a video titled '(We are) Family Matters.'
As history shows, TGIF is the universal acronym for "Thank God it's Friday," but those words mean different things to different generations.
To older generations and perhaps even the new generation, it simply means the weekend is here and it's time to relax, celebrate or just enjoy being out from under the responsibilities and stresses of school or work. To those who grew up in the 90s, it might also mean sitting in front of the TV every Friday night and watching ABC's lineup of hit sitcoms that aired throughout the decade.
Among them were the aforementioned Full House and Family Matters, the latter of which aired from 1989 to 1998. That's an impressive run in any television era, and thanks to endearing characters such as Steve Urkel, it earned a special place in the hearts of one generation, while gaining a whole new following in the years that have followed.
That brings us back to the video, which was produced by the Pittsburgh viral media group Benstonium.
Where as the Giants parody had more of a local flavor since Full House was set in San Francisco, the Pirates had to call on history. With Family Matters set in Chicago (the home of the division rival Cubs), Pittsburgh used their "We Are Family" World Series championship team from 1979 as their inspiration. It definitely works on that level, as it takes fans back to a memorable time in franchise history.
Many have also pointed out the attention to detail, such as the quality of the recording — note the crinkle in the middle of the screen — looking like its straight from a VHS tape. It doesn't get any more 80s or 90s than that.
Aside from that though, it's just a fun trip down memory lane, especially for many of the featured players who were born in or lived through the 90s.
