Notre Dame running back Greg Bryant will not suit up for the Irish this season.
Coach Brian Kelly announced Tuesday that Bryant would remain on scholarship and would be allowed to practice with the team, but that he would not occupy a roster spot.
“There are certain expectations within our program that must be met on a daily basis,” Kelly said in a statement. “Quite simply, Greg did not meet those expectations.”
Pete Sampson of Irish Illustrated, who spoke with Bryant’s father, said Bryant was declared academically ineligible, but that he would return to campus for school on Aug. 22.
Bryant played in 12 games last season and ranked second in rushing for the Irish with 289 yards. His three rushing TDs were fourth-best on the team.
In late June, reports surfaced that Bryant was going to miss the first four games of the season thanks to a suspension for a violation of team rules.
C.J. Prosise, who was a slot receiver the last two seasons, led the Irish in rushing during the spring game and Bryant was supposed to be the backup. Bryant and Tarean Folston were the only scholarship backs on the roster in the spring. Incoming freshmen Dexter Williams and Josh Adams could be pressed into duty just to add depth to the position.
Bryant also was a key member of the punt return team, returning eight punts for 94 yards.
