I guess life in the NFL is understanding that you can get bad injury news at anytime. You hope the guys you pay millions to stay healthy, but there's no way to prevent it, especially at running back.
Still, it was a bit odd to hear Houston Texans owner Bob McNair say that he wasn't surprised that star running back Arian Foster got hurt. Foster could miss much of the season with a severe groin injury.
“I’ve recognized how vulnerable he is,” McNair said Thursday to the Houston Chronicle. “I can’t say that I’m that surprised. It seems like every year he’s had some type of soft tissue injury. We just keep our fingers crossed and hope it won’t happen, but he seems to be vulnerable to that type of thing.”
That's a fairly strange thing for an owner to say. Was he complaining that Foster always seems hurt? Or just acknowledging that part of having a star running back in his late 20s comes with having the constant fear of injury?
Either way, Foster is out a while and the Texans offense will take a step back without him. Foster has been fantastic his entire career, including last season when he rushed for 1,246 yards in 13 games. The Texans tried to sign Pierre Thomas but that didn't work out. They have Alfred Blue and Chris Polk, but neither is in Foster's class.
You'd think that if the Texans knew this was coming, they'd have had a better backup plan.
