Former Angels GM Jerry Dipoto joins Red Sox on interim basis

It's been a little over a month since Jerry Dipoto resigned as general manager of the Los Angeles Angels. After a short break, Dipoto has decided to return to the game. On Wednesday, Peter Gammons of MLB Network reported that Dipoto would join the Boston Red Sox on an interim basis.
Dipoto told the Los Angeles Times that he'll be a "baseball consultant" with the club, but did not offer any additional details on his job. In this new role, it's believed Dipoto will evaluate players and assist the club in their offseason strategy. He's expected to work closely with general manager Ben Cherington for the next couple of weeks. Dipoto should be somewhat familiar with the organization, as he served as a scout for the Red Sox in 2003 and 2004.
It's unclear whether this position will lead to a full-time job with Boston. It's possible that the interim tag was placed on Dipoto in order to allow him to seek other jobs once the regular season ends. Dipoto should be a popular name once teams make changes within their front offices, and it wouldn't be a surprise if he wanted to take on that role again.
While his track record with the Angels is somewhat spotty, Dipoto is thought to be analytically inclined. That was believed to be part of the reason he and Angels manager Mike Scioscia did not get along. The Brewers are said to be seeking a young, stat-oriented candidate for their recently vacated GM position, so Dipoto's skill set is certain to be valued around the league.
When Dipoto left the Angels in July, he expressed a desire to remain in the game, according to the Boston Globe.
“I’m 47 years old, and this is the only industry I’ve ever worked in. I feel like I have a lot to offer. I’m not done working. I think there are things in which I can really help an organization, up to and including the potential of doing this job again. If it happens it happens. If it doesn’t, I’ll have no regrets. Over the last 3 1/2 years we’ve done a lot more good than bad.”
Dipoto's role with the Red Sox will give him that opportunity. Given his history, and the fact that this is not a permanent job, it might be the first step toward him becoming a GM again.
