Cowboys defensive tackle Josh Brent goes on reserve/retired list

Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Josh Brent (95) waits on the sideline during the first half of an NFL football game against the Chicago Bears Thursday, Dec. 4, 2014, in ChicagoApparently, Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Josh Brent is hanging up his cleats.
The Cowboys placed Brent on the reserve/retired list on Friday. This wouldn't be news in normal circumstances for a player who has played one game in two seasons, and recorded just two tackles. But we know that Brent, who turned 27 earlier this year, was involved in one of the NFL's most tragic incidents in many years.
Brent was convicted of intoxication manslaughter stemming from the Dec. 8, 2012 car accident that killed his teammate and friend Jerry Brown. Brent's blood-alcohol level was found to be twice the legal limit under Texas laws. He was sentenced to six months in jail.
The Cowboys welcomed him back on the team when he was released from jail. After serving a 10-game NFL suspension he played in one game, then suffered a calf injury in practice and didn't play the rest of the season.
Brent also briefly retired in 2013 while he was awaiting trial. He released a statement to Fox Sports 1's Mike Garafolo in which he said that football isn't the biggest priority in his life right now.
Fringe players walk away from football all the time and nobody notices. Not many of those players have the notoriety that Brent does.
