1920 - NY Yankees purchase Babe Ruth from the Red Sox for $125,000.
1931 - Nels Stewart of the Montreal Maroons scores 2 goals in 4 sec (record).
1971 - Baltimore Colts beat the Oakland Raiders 27-17 in the AFC Championship game.
1971 - Dallas Cowboys beat the SF '49ers 17-10 in the NFC championship game.
1974 - NY Yankees sign Bill Virdon as their manager.
1981 - Cleveland Cavaliers retire jersey # 34, Austin Carr.
1981 - NY Giants Quarterback Eli Manning is born.
1983 - Tony Dorsett sets NFL record with 99-yard rush, Dallas vs Minnesota.
1991 - LA King Wayne Gretzky scores his 700th goal against the NY Islanders.
2003 - Ohio State Buckeyes defeat the favored Miami Hurricanes 31-24 in double overtime in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl to be crowned the BCS National Champions.
