1903 -  First World Series, Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Boston Pilgrims later to be known at the Red Sox.
1919 - World Series begins as a best of 9 affair, as the Chicago White Sox intentionally throw the series to satisfy gamblers.
1922 - Former Chicago Staleys play their first professional football game as the Chicago Bears winning 6-0.
1924 - Commissioner Landis bans Giants Jimmy O'Connell & Cozy Dolan from the World Series after they admit an attempt to bribe Philadelphia's shortstop Heinie Sand,
1932 - NHL admits Ottawa and drops Pittsburgh as hockey franchises.
1961 - New York Yankees Roger Maris collects his record setting 61st HR of the season off of Tracy Stallard.
1975 - Muhammad Ali TKOs Joe Frazier in the 15th Round for the Heavyweight boxing title in the match that will come to be known as "the Thrilla in Manila".
1977 - Brazilian soccer great Pele' retires with 1,281 goals in 1,363 games.
1989 - Dallas Cowboys Ed "Too Tall" Jones records his 1,000th NFL tackle.
2004 - Seattle Mariners outfielder Ichiro Suzuki collects his 258th hit of the season, breaking George Sisler's 84-year-old single-season record.
