UAB running back Greg Bryant dead following Florida highway shooting

UAB running back Greg Bryant dies after highway shooting in FloridaFormer Notre Dame running back Greg Bryant, who committed to UAB last November, has died following a Saturday morning highway shooting in South Florida.
Bryant, a Delray Beach native, was driving his car, with 25-year-old friend Maurice Grover as a passenger, on Interstate 95 in Miami around 4:45 a.m. when he and Grover were shot. Police have not identified the shooter or shooters.
Both victims were taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach, according to the Palm Beach Post. It was there, Bryant succumbed to his injuries.
"We lost a member of our Blazer family today with the senseless passing of Greg Bryant," UAB coach Bill Clark said in a statement released after Clark spoke with Bryant's family members. "We were so excited to recruit Greg, welcome him to Birmingham and to UAB football, and get to know him over the past several months. Greg was a very special talent and young man. He always had a smile on his face. While he was with us for a short time — too short — he was a big part of an exciting and historical time for our program and will always be a Blazer."
Clark said Bryant was surrounded by family when he passed Saturday afternoon.
Earlier reports that Bryant had died were disputed by his Delray Beach high school. American Heritage School football coach Nick LaSala was at the hospital and said Bryant was in critical condition. West Palm Beach police detective Rob McGinley later confirmed Bryant's condition.
Grover sustained minor injuries, according to the Post.
The 21-year-old Bryant had been living in a North Miami hotel room while attending junior college ASA Miami after being ruled academically ineligible last fall at Notre Dame. After barely seeing the field as a freshman in 2013, Bryant ran for 289 yards and three touchdowns for the Irish in 2014.
UAB lost former defensive back Greg Maclin, a member of the 2013 and 2014 UAB teams, last June following an automobile accident.
