Raul A. Mondesi was hit with a 50-game suspension, MLB announced Tuesday. The 20-year-old middle infielder is the top prospect in the Kansas City Royals' system and is the son of former All-Star Raul Mondesi.
Mondesi tested positive for Clenbuterol, a drug most commonly associated with breathing disorders such as asthma. The suspension was originally for 80 games, as per the MLB and MLBPA's joint drug agreement, but was reduced to 50 games when Mondesi showed Clenbuterol is found in an over-the-counter cold medication he had taken in the offseason while at home in the Dominican Republic.
The Royals were quick to issue a statement on the matter, via general manager Dayton Moore:

Mondesi made history during the Royals' run to the championship last fall when he became the first player to make his major-league debut in the World Series. He is on Kansas City's 40-man roster and had been playing this season in Double-A, where he was hitting .250/.304/.462 with five homers and 11 steals in 25 games.
It seems like an innocent mistake on Mondesi's part, but he must face the consequences for his actions and he'll have to sit out 50 games. However, because of the unusual circumstances surrounding his suspension, he will be eligible for the Royals' postseason roster.
