After 37 rounds, only three teams are within three points of the top, but Barcelona’s head-to-head advantage over Atletico Madrid means that Diego Simeone’s men have been eliminated from the domestic title chase.
Simeone, who watched from a director’s box due to his touchline ban, sent in star forward Antoine Griezmann at halftime to get a goal. Instead, American-born Guiseppe Rossi popped up in the 90th minute and struck the mortal blow to Atleti’s La Liga title chase in Levante's 2-1 win.
Over in Barcelona, Lionel Messi perfectly placed an eighth-minute free kick into the back of the net to open the scoring over city rival Espanyol at the Camp Nou and retake the league lead. From there, Luis Suarez would put the game beyond doubt with two goals in the first 20 minutes of the second half. By the time the final whistle sounded, Neymar and Rafinha had also scored and Barcelona cruised to a 5-0 victory.
Real Madrid was the last of the title-chasing trio to get its opener, but Cristiano Ronaldo made no mistake with a shot across the keeper from the top of the box. Valencia goalkeeper Diego Alves had denied Ronaldo moments earlier, but the Portuguese would score a double on the day. Karim Benzema, who returned to the team following an absence of nearly two weeks, scored a controversial second goal with more than a hint of offside in the buildup.

Rodrigo would pull one goal back for Valencia before Ronaldo scored the match winner to put Real Madrid up 3-1 approaching the hour mark. Andre Gomes put the result in doubt when he scored a curling effort in the 81st minute, but Rodrigo’s confusing red card only a couple minutes later would provide Real Madrid the relief it needed in a 3-2 victory.
Both Benzema and Ronaldo would be subbed off on Sunday, and the latter was replaced by Alvaro Arbeloa, who likely made his final appearance at the Santiago Bernabeu. Accordingly, the crowd showered the defender with applause and even had a banner in the shape of Arbeloa’s No. 17 white shirt.
Along with Real Madrid and Barcelona going head-to-head in the title race, Ronaldo and Suarez are also battling for the Pichichi, the award for the top scorer in La Liga. With one match remaining, Suarez's 37 goals lead Ronaldo's 33 goals after 37 rounds. If the Uruguayan holds on, Suarez would become the first player not named Messi or Ronaldo to win the Pichichi Trophy since compatriot Diego Forlan won the award in 2008-09.
