1919 - Eddie Robinson, winningest College Football coach (Grambling) is born.
1920 - National Negro Baseball League organizes.
1923 - First Black pro Basketball team, "Renaissance," organizes.
1937 - NFL Boston Redskins move to Wash DC.
1952 - Rocky Marciano defeated Lee Savold for his 39th straight win.
1974 - James 'Cool Papa' Bell is named to baseball's Hall of Fame.
1976 - Dorothy Hamill wins Olympic figure-skating gold, Innsbruck, Austria.
1983 - World Boxing Council becomes first to cut boxing from 15 to 12 rounds.
1990 - Larry Bird (Celtics) ends NBA free throw streak of 71 games.
1993 - Sergei Bubka pole vaults indoor record (6.14 m).
2005 - Nelson Briles, baseball player (b. 1943) collapsed and died of an 
apparent heart attack in Orlando, Florida, while participating in the 
annual Pittsburgh Pirates alumni golf tournament. He was 61.
