1914 - Boston Braves are 15 games back in NL, & winWorld Series.
1919 - Red Sox Babe Ruth hits 2 HRs in a game for his first of 72 times.
1935 - Chicago Cubs are 10½ games back in NL, & go on to win the pennant.
1937 - Joe DiMaggio's 1st grand slammer.
1943 - Curt Blefary [Curtis Le Roy], Brooklyn, New York, baseball player
(1965 AL rookie of year, The Sporting News Rookie of the Year) is born.
1947 - Larry Doby signs with Cleveland Indians - first black player in AL.
1949 - NY Giants purchase Monty Irvin & Henry Thompson, their first blacks.
1951 - Dodgers sweep the Giants & lead by 7½ games (Giants will win pennant).
1951 - Richard "Goose" Gossage, relief pitcher (Yankees, Padres, A's) is born.

1973 - Christy Rowe, St Paul Minn, soccer defender (Olympics-96) is born.
1979 - Elizabeth Ryan, tennis ace (won 19 Wimbledon titles), dies at 87.
1987 - A's Mark McGwire is 1st rookie to hit 30 home runs before All Star break.

1998 - Sid Luckman, American football player (b. 1916) dies.
2002 - Ted Williams, baseball hall of famer and last player to bat 
over.400 in a single season (Boston Red Sox) dies at 84.
2009 - Roger Federer wins a record 15th Grand Slam in tennis, 
winning a five set match against Andy Roddick at Wimbledon.
