1896 - Charilaos Vasilakos wins 1st marathon (3:18).
1923 - The first radio broadcast of ice hockey is made by Foster Hewitt.
1934 - First Masters golf championship began in Augusta, Ga.
1952 - Bob Costas, Queens NY, sportscaster/talk show host (Later) is born.
1967 - Muhammad Ali KOs Zora Folley in 7th round for Heavyweight boxing title.
1972 - Kareem Abdul-Jabbar named NBA MVP.
1972 - Nick Mileti purchases the Cleveland Indians for $9 million.
1972 - Yankees trade Danny Cater to the Red Sox for Sparky Lyle.
1979 - NHL votes to accept 4 WHA teams (Oilers, Jets, Nordiques & Whalers).
1989 - Pete Rozelle announces retirement as NFL commissioner after 29 years.
1989 - Clint Malarchuk of the Buffalo Sabres suffers a near-fatal injury 
when another player accidentally slits his throat.
1993 - Steve Olin, pitcher for the Cleveland Indians, drowns at age 27.
