Jim Harbaugh wants you to know that he believes ESPN commentator Ed Cunningham was incorrect during Saturday’s broadcast of Michigan’s game vs. Hawaii.
According to MLive, Cunningham, serving as the game analyst for the broadcast, speculated the absence of cornerback Jourdan Lewis could have been related to a disciplinary issue. During Harbaugh’s press conference Monday, the Michigan coach said Cunningham was “way out over his skis” in projecting that Lewis’ absence was due to more than a minor injury.
“That was my decision based on — he was getting close enough to be healthy to play in the game,” Harbaugh said. “He was working through something that had nothing to do with any off-field suspension. Heard about Ed Cunningham got way out over his skis speculating that it was some kind of suspension.
“Jourdan Lewis is one of the finest guys we have on the team. Football character and off the field character. Just total character. So there’s few, if any better than Jourdan Lewis. Just wanted to clarify that for the record.”
Cunningham typically works Big Ten games for ESPN, so there’s a good chance he’ll get another Michigan game or two this season. We’ll see how the remarks affect any relationship he has with Harbaugh.
Lewis, a senior, started all 13 of Michigan’s games in 2015. He had 37 tackles and two interceptions. He went through pregame warmups, but Harbaugh was cautious with him on Saturday. And it was the right move as the Wolverines clearly didn’t need Lewis. Michigan beat Hawaii 63-3.
