After considering the evidence for almost two months, the Philadelphia district attorney's office will not press charges against Buffalo Bills running back LeSean McCoy over a bar fight.
The altercation, which happened early in the morning on Feb. 7, involved two off-duty police officers, who suffered injuries. McCoy and former NFL running back Curtis Brinkley were investigated. TMZ published a video of the fight and it appears to show McCoy's face, but it's hard to tell from that video if McCoy was involved in the fight.
The Philadelphia DA's office agreed that there wasn't enough evidence against McCoy. District attorney Seth Williams announced Monday that McCoy wouldn't face charges (via David Gambacorta of PhillyMag.com). Early Monday morning there were multiple reports, including Philadelphia law blog BigTrial.net, which was first to report the news, and Philly.com's Jeff McLane among others, that McCoy won't be charged.
According to Gambacorta's tweets, Williams and his office interviewed 27 people, and while a fight occured his office couldn't determine who started it. McCoy told the DA he was just defending his friend, and due to conflicting reports from people at the club, the DA's office couldn't show McCoy did more than defend his friend.
The news might mean McCoy won't be punished by the NFL, although commissioner Roger Goodell has previously punished players who weren't charged, and Goodell has an inconsistent track record with disciplinary matters. Since the Philadelphia district attorney couldn't find enough evidence to charge McCoy after almost two months of looking into the case, it probably bodes well that McCoy will avoid NFL punishment.
Philadelphia Fraternal Order of Police president John McNesby said in February that he was frustrated no charges were brought against McCoy right away. He and others might not be pleased McCoy will face no charges at all. But apparently there wasn't enough evidence. Now McCoy just has to find out if the NFL feels the same way.
