Tomsula is out now too, after he was fired Sunday night. The team announced the move, which ends the one-year Tomsula era, without a fraction of the success Harbaugh experienced as 49ers coach. And the 49ers aren’t going to have an easy time convincing any good candidate to come there after this fiasco.
Tomsula was fired after the 49ers' overtime win over the St. Louis Rams, which was just their fifth win this season. Tomsula was a strange hire from a suddenly dysfunctional team. He was promoted after a totally botched courting of Adam Gase, then the Denver Broncos offensive coordinator. From reports, Gase all but agreed to be the head coach, then was told at the last minute that Tomsula would have to be his defensive coordinator or he couldn’t have the job. Gase declined, became the Chicago Bears’ offensive coordinator and had a good year. Gase is one of the top candidates on the head coaching market this offseason. It’s safe to say he won’t be interviewing with the 49ers.
Tomsula was a punch line from his opening press conference, which he stumbled through. The 49ers showed very little on the field under his leadership, though the roster was decimated in an awful offseason.
Where do the 49ers turn now? San Francisco has to look like a terrible destination for a hot candidate. They ran out Harbaugh, who was 44-19-1 as head coach. They totally screwed up the Gase situation. Then the coach they went out of their way to take care of a year ago, Tomsula, was fired after just one season on the job. The owner, Jed York, has not been accountable and his general manager Trent Baalke somehow keeps surviving. Assuming Colin Kaepernick is on his way out, there’s no quarterback in place. An organization that was playing in the NFC championship game just two seasons ago is a mess now.
Tomsula didn’t get much of a chance to prove himself. Good luck to the 49ers’ next coach in turning everything back around.
