Firing Mike McCoy would have been one of those moves NFL teams mindlessly make just because they feel a losing season must result in a fired head coach.
The Chargers went 4-12 this season with a ton of injuries all over the roster, and many thought McCoy might get fired. Not so fast. The San Diego Union-Tribune's Mike Gehlken reported that McCoy was informed Monday he is safe for another season as Chargers coach.
That doesn't mean there won't be big changes for the Chargers, who might be moving the whole franchise this offseason.
Staff changes are expected, Gehlken said, because apparently someone has to take the fall for a 4-12 season even though the Chargers finished the season with 15 players on injured reserve. The Chargers lost some close games and competed hard until the end, when they led the Denver Broncos in the fourth quarter of the season finale. Things might have been different with some better injury luck. McCoy did go 9-7 in each of his first two seasons.
This is the season for NFL teams to overreact to losing seasons and completely change the course of the franchise. The Chargers didn't want to do that. They believed in McCoy three years ago when they hired him, and an injury-ravaged season didn't change that.
Continuity at head coach might be good for the Chargers, considering the location of the franchise might be changing.
