ESPN’s Joe Schad is reporting that Alabama running back Derrick Henry will forgo his senior season and declare for the NFL draft. The 6-foot-3, 242-pound Henry rushed for 2,219 yards and 28 touchdowns this season – both No. 1 in the nation.
Henry rushed for 158 yards and three touchdowns in the Tide’s 45-40 national title win over Clemson on Monday night. Henry rushed for more than 125 yards in 10 of the Tide’s 14 games this season and also surpassed the 200-yard mark four times.
As a sophomore in 2014, Henry rushed for 990 yards and 11 touchdowns while splitting carries with T.J. Yeldon, a second-round selection of the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2015 draft. Henry also rushed for 382 yards and three scores as a freshman in 2013, including a breakout performance – 100 rushing yards and a 61-yard touchdown reception – in the Sugar Bowl against Oklahoma.
Other Alabama players – defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson, defensive end Jonathan Allen and tight end O.J. Howard – have yet to announce their decisions. Defensive back Eddie Jackson and defensive lineman Tim Williams have already announced they will return for the 2016 season.
The deadline to declare for the draft is Jan. 18.
