Of all the coaches, in all the towns, in all the world, the Philadelphia Eagles had to pick Tom Coughlin to interview.
Multiple reports including ESPN, Fox Sports and NFL Network said that Tom Coughlin, a two-time Super Bowl champion with the New York Giants, is expected to interview Monday for the Eagles' head-coaching vacancy. Coughlin, who coached the Giants for 12 years, stepped down from his post on Monday.
Because Coughlin stepped down, and wasn't fired, the Eagles had to ask permission to their NFC East rivals to interview Coughlin. ESPN's Adam Schefter said the Giants wouldn't stand in the way.
Of all the possible pairings of coaching candidates and teams with a vacancy, Coughlin to the Eagles might be the most fun to think about.
If Coughlin feels like he was pushed out by the Giants, and he took the high road and stepped down first, getting to face New York twice a year as coach of the Eagles might be appealing to him. And the Eagles would have to feel like they're getting over on their rivals by grabbing the coach who led the Giants to a pair of Super Bowl titles. It's not exactly Brett Favre orchestrating landing with the Minnesota Vikings so he could play the Green Bay Packers twice a year, but it would still be interesting.
Coughlin, who is 69, never said he was retiring when he spoke with the media and said he was "not necessarily" done with coaching. Most Giants fans probably figured the chances were decent Coughlin would coach again. They probably didn't figure on it maybe being right down Interstate 95 from them.
