In what is believed to be Roger Goodell's first appearance at a game featuring the defending Super Bowl champions since deflate-gate reached DEFCON 1 this past summer, the NFL commissioner was seen chatting with New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft and president Jonathan Kraft on the sideline before the game against the New York Giants.
While several media members on site described the conversation as "animated," Jonathan Kraft downplayed that description, telling Boston's 98.5 The Sports Hub the discussion centered on e-commerce and digital media rather than ongoing lawsuits and the air pressure in footballs. Via ESPN.com:
"Our feelings on that are known. ... At the same time, there's other business going on that we're involved in. You separate those two things, and that's the way it's working right now."
Goodell made headlines when he didn't attend New England's season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers. In his weekly appearance during the Patriots pregame radio broadcast, Kraft said he thought Goodell came to the game at MetLife Stadium because it was closer to his home turf of New York and the commissioner wanted to make a public appearance after the recent terrorist attacks in Paris.
"He didn't say this to me, but I'm assuming one of the reasons he's here today: He lives in New York, and the situation that happened on Friday in Paris, which is beyond words tragic and horrible, part of what took place there was at a sporting event. I'm sure that's one of Roger's motives — the need to be public, at a venue. I give him a lot of credit, wanting to be visible. I think that's why he's here and that way rises above anything else."
Still, it had to be an awkward talk between Goodell and the Krafts, since the commissioner reopened the deflate-gate wound when the NFL filed its appeal of a judge's ruling to overturn Tom Brady's four-game suspension. At least New Jersey native and Bill Belichick buddy Jon Bon Jovi was there to lighten the mood.
So, did Bon Jovi make a "You Give Love a Bad Name" or a "Wanted Dead or Alive" joke here?
