After completing just five passes and throwing four interceptions on Sunday against Kansas City, Peyton Manning was benched by Denver Broncos coach Gary Kubiak. On the CBS broadcast, sideline reporter Jamie Erdahl said Kubiak confirmed benching Manning was a coach's decision and not related to injury.
But ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting that Manning was hurting, though it wasn't his throwing arm: Manning has been dealing with plantar fasciitis in his left foot, but according to Schefter, Manning has a tear of the tissue.
Plantar fasciitis are microtears in the tissue, which connects the heel to the base of the toes. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport tweeted something slightly different than Schefter, along the lines that Manning caused aggravation to his foot on Sunday:
As Schefter noted in a subsequent tweet, partial tears are very painful. Manning's brother Eli played the 2009 season with a fully-torn plantar fascia, but that is not as uncomfortable.
Generally, treatment for a torn plantar fascia is simply rest to let the microtears heal.
Manning has been listed on the Broncos' injury report with a right shoulder injury and the foot injury, and the team added ribs to the report on Saturday, after Manning told trainers he felt discomfort.
Kubiak blamed himself for letting Manning play against the Chiefs, though he kept the 39-year-old in the game until midway through the third quarter, long enough for Manning to post a 0.0 passer rating and one of the worst games for a quarterback in modern NFL history.
"To be honest with you, I was protecting him. I was worried about him," Kubiak said after the loss. "Let me just say this: Obviously, I'm very disappointed in the football game ... I'm disappointed in myself, this is on me. I probably should have made a decision not to play him in the game. I needed to make probably that tough decision there.
"He practiced Friday, you know, felt good,'' Kubiak said. "[He] came out of practice Friday, Saturday, as you all know, his ribs were bothering him a little bit, and I probably should, right there, said no."
