The team has released Josh McCown, who started 11 games for the Buccaneers last season after signing a two-year, $10 million deal last year. McCown's deal will provide no additional salary-cap relief in terms of future bonuses — this was just a straight-up, thanks-for-the-service roster move — even though he was slated to count for $5.25 million on the cap next season.
McCown, 35, beat out Mike Glennon (it never really was a battle) for the starting job and struggled, completing 184-of-327 passes (56.3 percent) for 2,206 yards, with 11 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. He came over from the Chicago Bears following a strong 2013 outing, and head coach Lovie Smith thought McCown's leadership and experience would buoy his new squad.
It did not. Glennon also struggled for the most part, and the Buccaneers will open the 2015 season with their third different starting quarterback in Week 1 in as many seasons.
Glennon is the only established quarterback on the roster and might be in the starting mix next season, but this move only makes it more likely the Bucs will select a quarterback — either Jameis Winston or Marcus Mariota — with the first overall selection in the 2015 NFL draft.
