According to multple reports, Manziel entered a treatment facility on Wednesday. It's not clear what Manziel is receiving treatment for.
Here's a statement from adviser Brad Beckworth to ESPN.com, via a Manziel spokesman:
"Johnny knows there are areas in which he needs to improve in order to be a better family member, friend and teammate and he thought the offseason was the right time to take this step," Beckworth said.
"On behalf of Johnny and his family, we're asking for privacy until he rejoins the team in Cleveland."
Manziel played only six quarters as the Cleveland Browns' starting quarterback this season, suffering a season-ending hamstring injury, and he struggled to stay on course this season, being fined for missing a team meeting and frustrating his teammates.
After being selected with the 22nd pick in the 2014 NFL draft by the Browns, Manziel spurred excitement throughout the organization. But he became known for his nightlife behavior as much as he did his play, losing the starting job out of training camp to Brian Hoyer and never really showing his Heisman Trophy prowess in completing 18-of-35 passes (51.4 percent) for 175 yards with zero touchdowns and two interceptions. Manziel also was limted as a runner, rushing nine times for 29 yards with one touchdown.
Now the Browns head into an offseason of unknowns, with Manziel receiving treatment, Hoyer a free agent and Josh Gordon's status uncertain following a positive test for alcohol.
Will Manziel ever fulfill his potential? We have a long way to go before we can answer that loaded question.
