Football hero helps his team win the big game, then stops on the way home to help pull a driver from an overturned car.
The story is probably too corny for Hollywood, but just about right for the New England Patriots these days.
Not long after the Patriots won the AFC championship with a blowout win over the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, star defensive tackle Vince Wilfork stopped when he saw a Jeep on its side after an accident on Route 1 in Foxboro. Troopers responding to the accident found Wilfork at the side of the car and the driver, who couldn't get out of the vehicle, by the time they arrived.
Now here's where this story goes into "Come on, you're making this up" territory. According to the Massachusetts State Police, an officer held the driver's door open while the 325-pound Wilfork lifted the female driver out with one arm. Of course.
The woman involved in the accident was charged with operating under the influence of alcohol and negligent operation of a motor vehicle, the Massachusetts State Police said.
Wilfork didn't make a big deal of his act.
"I saw somebody that needed help, and I helped," Wilfork told Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald on Monday.
Wilfork helping out is reminiscent of New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi stopping to help a car accident victim not long after the Yankees won the 2009 World Series.
Wilfork is in his 11th season with the Patriots and has been to the Pro Bowl five times. He's also available for roadside assistance when needed.
