Wisconsin scores just one second into game against Western Illinois

It took only one second for Wisconsin to take the lead against Western Illinois.

Western Illinois running back Kyle Hammonds was set to receive the opening kickoff, but when he attempted to field the ball three yards deep the ball deflected off his chest and bounced to the half-yard line.

Hammonds, with his left foot still in the end zone and his right foot in the field of play, then retrieved the ball and took a knee in the end zone, hoping to advance the ball to the 20 with a touchback. It didn’t quite work out.

The referees originally ruled that it was a touchback, but after a review it was ruled a safety because Hammonds was partially out of the end zone when he picked up the ball.

The blunder gave the Badgers a 2-0 lead in what might be the fastest score in a game ever.

Western Illinois was already a 41-point underdog heading into the game, so the last thing it needed to do was shoot itself in the foot. That's not a great way to start for the Leathernecks.
