1892 - First basketball game played (Mass).
1940 - Carol Heiss Jenkins, NYC, figure skater (Oly-gold/silver-56, 60) is born.
1956 - John Phillips Naber, Evanston Ill, swimmer (Olympic-4 gold/silver-76) is born.
1964 - Ozzie Guillen, Oculare del Tuy Venezuela, shortstop, 
manager (Chicago White Sox) is born.
1968 - Houston ends UCLA's 47-game basketball winning streak, 71-69.
1974 - Essex Comm College beats Englewood Cliffs 210-67 in basketball.
1974 - Rae Carruth, wide receiver (Carolina Panthers) is born.  On January 22, 2001 
Carruth was found guilty of conspiracy to commit murder, shooting into an 
occupied vehicle, and using an instrument to destroy an unborn child 
occuring on November 16, 1999. He was sentenced to 18 to 24 years in prison.
1980 - President Jimmy Carter announces US boycott of Olympics in Moscow.
1980 - Super Bowl XIV: Pittsburgh Steelers beat LA Rams, 31-19 in 
Pasadena, MVP: Terry Bradshaw, Pittsburgh, QB.
1984 - Johnny Weissmuller, US swimmer (Olympics-5 gold-1924, 28), dies at 79.
1985 - Super Bowl XIX: SF 49ers beat Miami Dolphins, 38-16 in 
Stanford Super Bowl MVP: Joe Montana, San Francisco, QB.
1991 - Matt Barr's field goal with no time left gives NY Giants 15-13 
victory over defending champs SF 49ers, for NFC title.
1994 - Matt Busby, Scottish soccer coach (Manchester United), dies at 84.
