1878 - The first rugby match under floodlights takes place in Salford, 
between Broughton and Swinton.
1884 - Sporting Life announces that both pennant winners will meet in 
3 game series Oct 23-25 at Polo Grounds NYC to determine baseball champion.
1885 - John Ward & several teammates secretly form 
Brotherhood of Professional Base Ball Players, first baseball union.
1907 - Jimmy Foxx, baseball HR hitter (534, Detroit Tigers) is born.
1927 - Ross Youngs, Hall of Fame baseballer, dies of Bright's disease at 30.
1963 - Brian Boitano, Mountainview California, figure skater (Olympic-gold-1988) is born.
1967 - Joe DiMaggio is hired as executive VP of A's by Charlie Finley.
1969 - Giovanni Martinelli, Italian opera singer (NY Met), dies on 84th birthday.
1973 - Ichiro Suzuki, Japanese baseball player is born.
1978 - Grete Weitz runs female world record marathon (2:32:29.8).
1984 - NFL quarterback Ken Stabler retires.
1985 - Bret Saberhagen gives KC Royals their first World Series win.
1992 - Atlanta, becomes first US team to win a World Series game out of US.
1992 - Red Barber, sportscaster (Dodgers, Yankees), dies at 84.
1997 - NY Ranger Wayne Gretsky wife Janet is knocked unconcious & 
gets 2 stitches while watching the game as a plexiglass falls on her.
